You probably walk past dozens of vending machines every week without giving them much thought. Candy bars, sodas, maybe some chips—standard fare that’s been around for decades. But step outside the typical office building or school hallway, and you’ll discover a world of vending machines that dispense everything from live crabs to luxury cars. Let’s explore four of the most unique types of vending machines.

Seafood Vending Machines

In China, you might be surprised to find seafood vending machines. Crab dispensers are the most common, giving you a single crab packaged in a plastic case. If you don’t have time to make it to the market, you can just grab your dinner from the machine slot!

Car Vending Machines

Singapore made headlines in 2017 when Autobahn Motors opened what they called the world’s largest car vending machine. The 15-story glass tower houses luxury vehicles, including Bentleys, Ferraris, and Lamborghinis. Customers use a touchscreen kiosk on the ground floor to browse available cars, then watch as robotic systems retrieve their selection. Buyers must complete financing and paperwork beforehand, so the vending experience serves as the final step in purchasing rather than impulse buying.

In the US, Carvana followed suit. The company now has 37 car vending machines throughout the country. Need a new car? Find your local dispenser!

Tool Vending Machines

Industrial tool vending machines are perhaps the most practical innovation in automated retail. These units stock everything from drill bits and PPE to measuring devices and consumables like cutting oil. The businesses that benefit from tool vending machines tend to be in the industrial sector, such as manufacturing facilities, construction sites, and maintenance departments.

The machines reduce administrative overhead while ensuring critical supplies remain available to workers around the clock.

Sock Vending Machines

Ever forget to put on socks or realize you didn’t pack any as you’re waiting in line for your flight? Those are the problems that sock vending machines aim to solve. This type of dispenser is surprisingly common, even if you haven’t seen one, particularly in airports and malls.

The Future of Automated Retail

These unique types of vending machines demonstrate how automation can reshape retail experiences. Each type addresses specific market needs while offering convenience that traditional stores cannot match. As technology advances and consumer expectations evolve, we’ll likely see even more creative applications of automated retail systems. What’s the strangest vending machine you’ve seen in person?
