River rocks add a beautiful, natural touch to any landscape, from garden beds to pathways. Over time, however, you may find your rock features looking a bit sparse. Weeds might start poking through, or the rocks may have shifted, leaving gaps.

If you’ve decided it’s time to refresh your landscaping, you might be wondering where to start. We’re discussing what to do when you need new river rock in your landscaping.

Assess Your Current Landscaping

Before buying new material, take a close look at your existing river rock beds. Are the rocks just thin in a few spots, or does the entire area need a new layer? Check the condition of the landscape fabric underneath. Weeds will continue to be a problem if there are tears or damage in the fabric. You should plan to replace the fabric before adding new rocks.

Also, consider the state of the rocks themselves. Are they covered in dirt and debris? Sometimes, a thorough cleaning will make a big difference and you may not need as much new rock as you initially thought.

Calculate How Much Rock You Need

After you assess the area, you must determine the quantity of new river rock required. You’ll need a tape measure to get the job done.

Follow these steps to calculate the amount:

  • Measure the length and width of the area you want to cover.
  • Multiply the length by the width to get the square footage.
  • Decide on the desired depth of your rock layer. A depth of two to three inches is standard for most landscaping projects.

A cubic yard of river rock typically covers about 100 square feet at a three inch depth. Use this as a general guideline, but always confirm with your supplier, as rock sizes can affect coverage. It’s often wise to order slightly more than you calculate to make sure you have enough for the entire project.

Arrange for Your Rock Delivery

After figuring out how much rock you need, it’s time to place your order. One of the biggest challenges of any landscaping project is getting heavy materials to your home. This is where you can realize the benefits of delivery for backyard projects.

Having pounds of river rock dropped off right where you need it saves you the trouble of hauling multiple bags from a store. It eliminates physical strain and multiple trips, letting you focus your energy on the project itself.

When you’re ready to get started, you’ll have everything on-site. This makes the process of refreshing your landscape much smoother and more efficient.

With your river rock on its way, you can now focus on preparing your landscape for a fresh, clean look. By planning ahead and ordering the right amount of material, you ensure your project goes off without a hitch.
